FIRE DRILL

On Tuesday we had our first fire drill of the year. The fire drill happened just after we went back into class after long play.
It took the whole school just over five minutes to get out to our meeting place, all lined up and the roll taken. Ms McKendry says that is better than our worst, but not as good as our best!
Can you see us walking out and getting all lined up? The staff all had to come out and be accounted for too, even the office staff and Mr Blondell.

Art for our special place

The Rimu team have been busy creating art work to brighten up our outdoor learning space.   We are making plans for how our own outdoor area can be used a shared learning and play space.   Today we have been designing and painting stones.  Students chose their favourite design, transferred them onto their stone and painted using poster paints.  They showed great team playing and self management, as well as amazing creativity!

YEAR 3 DIARAMAS

As part of their outdoor education experience, the Year 3s visited Spencer Park, where they had a beach education experience with the Chch City Council educators, about the human impacts on the beach environment.
They created diaramas to show what they had learned. They included the environment, animals and plants found at the beach and also how humans can impact on this. Here are some of our diaramas.

YEAR 3 CAMP

Last week, we had a fabulous time on our Year 3 camp.
We had a day trip to Spencer Park on Wednesday.
We stayed in tents at school on Thursday night.
We got to eat hamburgers and pudding .... and then supper!
We got to play spotlight. First the parents looked for us and then in the second game, we had to look for the parents.
On Friday we made our beach diaramas and then we had an awesome pool party and shared lunch. After that it was time for a quiet afternoon watching videos.
We went home really tired after school on Friday!!! (and so did Ms McKendry and Mrs Jenkins!)

THE WHANAU SWIMMING RELAY

Well, we held the whanau swimming relay over until Friday and, would you believe, it was raining!
However, we decided to go ahead, such was the enthusiasm of the children.

The winning team was Ross (red) with William, Sophia and Stacey swimming. William even swam twice, as one of the team swimmers was absent.

Second came Newton (orange) with Brooklyn, Ben B, Aleia and Madison swimming.
Third was Selwyn (purple) with Otis, Brody and Rosie swimming. Otis swam twice for this team.

Here is a photo of the winning team:

PUKEKO TEAM SWIMMING SPORTS

Well, what a day! We had the swimming sports scheduled for Wednesday 4 March, the weather was a bit dodgy and three out of our five teachers were away!
However, we decided to go ahead and were glad we did, as it was an excellent event.
Thanks so much to all the parents who came and supported the children or helped out in any way.
Here are some photos from this fun event:

Our brain

We had our second visit to Harold today, boy did we learn a lot about our brain!

What did you learn about the brain? Can you remember what the different parts felt like? Do you remember if you use your left or rightside of your brain more?

Leave us a comment telling us what you have learnt.  Don't forget What Makes a Great Blog Comment.

Thomas is holding the Cerebellum (say sair-uh-BELL-um)

Cerebellum is located at the back of our brain.  Can you feel a little knob that's at the base of your head? That's where it is located. This controls our movement, giving us our balance and controls our muscles so we don't drop the rugby ball.

Niko is holding the hypothalamus

Our hypothalamus controls our temperature and tells us when we are too hot or too cold.  It's found right in the middle of our brain (this explains why Mrs P is always cold!)

Chase is holding the Cerebrum (say such-REE-brum)

The biggest part of our brain is called the Cerebrum, this is like our very own computer, it controls our thinking. This is where our memories are kept as well.

Pop on over!

Hi Rimu Community.  LC 18 has their very own class blog that you are more than welcome to comment on.

We have some exciting videos on there as Mrs P has discovered the time lapse feature on her phone over the holidays! :-)

Don't forget that when you are posting a comment

  • FIRST name only
  • Remember to compliment the author
  • Ask questions to have a dialogue going
  • Use your RESPECTFUL CITIZEN KC kid attitude of being polite
So have ago at leaving a comment, if you're not sure, just ask :-)

Chalk art

One of the choices for art was becoming apart of their art.  We researched some ideas on the Internet and piggy backed ideas, because Mrs P explained briefly about copyright and not copying someone's work exactly.

"It was really fun drawing with friends from different classes" Daniel

Some artists really got amongst their work, thank goodness it was a Friday so we could have clean uniforms for Monday.
