ACIDS AND ALKALIS

LC2 children went to the Science lab today to do experiments about mixing acids and carbonates to see what happened.

We worked in small groups. We got to choose two things mix but thy had to be in different lists. In the acids list was lemon juice, vinegar, orange juice, tomato juice and grapefruit juice. In the bases list was washing soda, baking powder and chalk.

When some things mixed they bubbled up and fizzed. Some changed colour a little bit.  We got the biggest bubbles from mixing vinegar and baking powder. The chalk didn't fizz very much at all.

It went fizzy from a chemical reaction. That mean the acid and the carbonate mixed and changed and there was a gas given off. The gas from a carbonate is carbon dioxide.

It was fun to do the experiments. For some of us it was the first time doing experiments like this.

Rimu Mathletes of the week - weeks 2, 3 and 4

Congratulations to our amazing Rimu Mathletes Of The Week from Weeks 2, 3 and 4 Term 2.

Rimu makes fabulous autumn art in teams!

The Rimu Team worked together and showed their team playing KCs on Thursday as they cooperated in teams of 5 to make Autumn Art.
One member of the team was responsible for designing and dyeing the background, another member produced the tree trunks, and the rest of the team got to work colouring and cutting out over 100 autumn leaves.

The team then worked together to assemble the finished art work.
Mrs Jenkins, Mrs OB and Mrs Lea were REALLY impressed with the team work, cooperation and artistic talents that the Rimu students demonstrated in this fun, noisy and messy session!
The finished art work will be on display in the LC18 Swamp (meeting room) later in week 5.

Rehearsals for KidsforKids concert going strong!

The Pukeko team is raising the roof every Friday afternoon, practicing for our KidsforKids concert.  We can't wait to show you our amazing talents when we perform the concert in Term 3!

CREATIVE COSTUMES

On Friday, a group of Pukeko team children took part in a fun and creative technology challenge as part of their strategic problems solving learning.

The children worked in groups of four to design an original costume, which had to be modelled by one of them. each group had only six pieces of newspaper, sticky tape and scissors. The design brief stated that the costume had to have a top and a bottom part, or be all in one, there had to be a hat and there had to be an accessory, of the group's choice.

As you can see from the photos, the variety of thinking, planning, teamwork and creativity that went into this challenge was phenomenal! LC1 and LC2 were a buzz of focused activity, as children from across the Pukeko team got stuck it.  It was a fun and creative afternoon for all!
